venice map guide

Inspired by some of the work of Brazilian artist Zema Vieira who works with CAD to produce layered images with line, colour and shadow, this project began back in Autumn 2017 as an experiment to explore the capabilities of a functional computer drafting tool in making something beautiful. It then evolved quite rapidly to a proposal to generate a series of maps within a book and a single explorers map sheet for visitors to Venice's Biennales and curious travellers who intend staying there longer than a day.
14 November 2021 update:
Slow and steady progress: This rather faint image represents work over a four year period. The coloured areas for the districts (sestieri) of San Marco and Giudecca as per the detail above, and the partially complete linework for Dorsoduro. The grid squares represent the full area of the Venetian islands to be covered in 176 map sheets. Some photos of prints below.
